Last year, there were so many beautiful hand painted floral ornaments that looked ceramic, but were actually made from plastic ornaments. They looked beautiful and they were much less destructive than glass. I decided to give it a try since I love painting flowers on anything I can and Christmas ornaments seems a perfect chance. They remind me a bit of cottage core which would be lovely on a cottage themed tree.

These type of flowers are actually simple enough that even my daughter painted a couple with me. These flowers are impressionistic style that doesn't require too much technique. Just some blending of different colors. They're actually the same type of flowers that I did on this wooden play cake that I made for my daughter and on these painted pumpkins. They're so fun to paint and I really love the chiaroscuro effect of the bright, pastel colors on the dark background. It looks moody and bright. But, any color combinations could be great!
I guess, once you find something you like to paint, you can't help to paint on other things too :). The flowers are just my favorite. I think I need to do it on a wall for my next mural.

Supplies:

Watch the full video below to see the visual process.

Step 1: Paint a Faux Ceramic Coat

Mix a little bit of baking soda with a color you would like to use for your base color. I mixed a tsp at a time until I got a consistancy that I liked. You want it to look a bit chalky but not too thick that you can't paint it on the ornament ball. The baking soda and the paint will give your ornament a beautiful, faux ceramic look.

Step 2: Paint your Flowers

Let the base dry and then start painting your flowers. As you can see in the video, I usually do a circle base for my flower and then start adding layers of different shades of the color I want. I then add leaves in a similar fashion.

Let your ornament dry and add it to your tree! I'd love to see if you do your own. Tag me or send me a picture!
