Giving gifts to others that are homemade are fun and heart warming. These DIY felt houses are a great little gift idea to sew up or hang them on the tree as house ornaments.
2020 has been the year of home. For many, it has been rough and new. Since we've already been homeschooling, we were used to being mostly at home together. But this year is different than usual. Being at home with everything canceled and doing birthdays and holidays with just us was different and new. It has definitely been hard, but our little family has grown closer and I've loved this year despite any anxiety it has caused me.
As I was thinking of this year and Christmas and I knew we needed a home ornament to remember how this brought us together and how we need to stay together even when things go back to normal one day. And then I got to thinking that I needed to make something to share with others. Little felt houses gift bags that are also Christmas ornaments. But these don't have to be just for Christmas, they can work for any time of the year. I used my Silhouette Cameo 4 and used HTV Flock for the first time and it was perfect!
I added some printable quotes to go with them. It was hard picking some quotes, but these ones stood out to me and are perfect for this year of Covid and for always. Download below
"Regardless of your circumstances you can center your home and your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, for he is the source of true peace in this life." Richard G. Scott
"Each of us is an innkeeper who decides if there is room for Jesus!" - Neal A. Maxwell
For this tutorial I used a Silhouette Cameo, HOWEVER, I have included a simple house pattern that can easily be cut with scissors. You can even still use the flocked vinyl and use scissors to cut out doors and windows if you like. But please note that this is still very doable as a non cutting machine project.
DIY Felt Houses Pattern and Christmas Gift
Cutting Machine - Silhouette Cameo 4 rotary cutter can cut felt amazingly well!
Step 1: Cut pattern
Download the house pattern and cut out your felt. I used my silhouette to do so, but it is a simple enough pattern that you can trace the pattern on the felt and cut it yourself.
Step 2: Add Flocked Vinyl
After it's cut out, you can add the flocked vinyl heart and windows (totally optional). Also optional, you can add Home 2020 to the back. I did that as a last minute touch because it's been quite the year and we've all been at home.
Step 3: Sew
I really wanted to hand sew these, but also needed to do many of these. I saved a few for my kids to hand sew. It's a great little handicraft sewing project for them. I sewed them just along the bottom and sides since I wanted to be able to put treats inside them.
Step 4: Add ribbon
I cut little holes in the top of the houses and then added some muslin ribbon. It looks so rustic and cute to me. These little houses now make cute little treat bags AND Christmas ornaments. I think I might have my kids make these for Valentines day too!
