The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
"All children mythologize their birth. . . . So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain."
I really didn't know what I was getting into when i started this book, but was immediately mesmerized by the story and writing. I had just read Jane Eyre before reading this book, and was intrigued how the author incorporated it into the story. There were moments that were dark and sad, but essential to the final twist of the story. When I finally thought all the pieces were coming together, a new twist was added to the story, even up until the very end.
I don't think I could really put down in words why I really enjoyed this book...
